Joined-up Journeys, Part 2: My Integration Top Ten Stats

March 19, 2026

Part 2 of EEH's evidence based approach to the 'Joined-up Journey's' inquiry. From accessibility gaps to the rapid rise of micromobility, these stats show how better planning, smarter connections and strong digital tools can transform everyday journeys.

I wrote last week about the evidence I uncovered from the Transport Committee’s recent inquiry on ‘joined up journeys’ as part of EEH’s major programme of work on integration (more information found here)

In doing so, one thing that became clear was that beneath all the policy language and technical detail sits a set of striking statistics that show both the scale of the challenge and the immense opportunity for integration in the UK and our region.

I thought it would be fun to list my ‘Top Ten’ favourite stats from the around 100 responses.

So, in no particular order:

  • Two thirds of multimodal journeys begin with walking (ASLEF)
  • Improving walking and cycling links to stations can boost footfall by up to 30% (Campaign for Better Transport)
  • 84% of the top ten percent most deprived neighbourhoods in England have below average connectivity and 40% of households have no car (Campaign for Better Transport).
  • Loneliness increases by 5% for every 20% drop in public transport satisfaction, showing the social impact of poor integration. (Transport Focus; Social Market Foundation, 2025)
  • 92% of disabled travellers face barriers on at least one mode of transport (Higgins et al), with only 1 in 4 mainline rail stations including step-free access and 2% being step-free from platform to train, leaving just 13% to feel confident enough to travel by rail (NCAT; Bell et al; Transport for all).
  • 1/3 of Lime e-bike trips connect with public transport and have replaced over one million car journeys. During a Tube strike, Lime saw a 54% week-on-week increase in demand. (Lime)
